Original 250+ year old stone trade beads. Traded by the Cherokee Indians. Excellent condition for their age. Show a good surface patina. Every purchase gets you 5 beads. The beads you get may vary just slightly in color and condition. Native American Trade Beads History: The first European explorers and colonists gave Native Americans glass and ceramic beads as gifts and used beads for trade with them. Native Americans had made bone, shell, and stone beads long before the Europeans arrived in North ... moreAmerica, and continued to do so. However, European glass beads, mostly from Venice, some from Holland and, later, from Poland and Czechoslovakia, became popular and sought after by Native Americans. Europeans realized early on that beads were important to Native Americans and corporations such as the Hudson Bay Trading Company developed lucrative bead-trading markets with them. The Hudson Bay Trading Company was an organized group of explorers who ventured into the North American continent for trade expeditions during the 19th century. The availability of glass beads increased, their cost decreased, and they became more widely used by Indians throughout North America. Ceramic beads declined in popularity as glass bead manufacturers came to dominate the market because of their variety of color, price, and supply.

The Aztec Death Whistle: Once heard, the disturbing sound can not be forgotten In the 1990s, archeologists in Mexico City unearthed a 500-year-old skeleton near an ancient Aztec temple—a victim of human sacrifice. A grisly discovery, yes, but perhaps even more chilling was what the beheaded skeleton was holding: two small whistles, one in the shape of a skull. When a researcher blew into one of the tiny instruments, the horrifying sounds that emerged immediately captivated imaginations. One ... morescholar described the noise as “a shriek of death.” The sound is shocking and sent a chill up the spines of everyone who was around to hear it. It is the sound of a human scream. The dreadful, high-pitched sound of the whistle is perhaps most comparable to a human scream. “There are different air streams generated within the structure of these instruments, which then diametrically hits against each other,” said Arnd Adje Both, a music archaeologist who has examined the whistle. “And thus the Aztecs were able to produce a very shrill and noisy sound.” *** THIS DOES NOT PRODUCE A WHISTLE, RATHER A CHILLING SHRILL AND NOISY SOUND COMPARABLE TO A HUMAN SCREAM*** Two skull-shaped, hollow whistles were found 20 years ago at the temple of the wind god Ehecatl, in the hands of a sacrificed male skeleton. When the whistles were finally blown, the sounds created were described as terrifying. The whistles make the sounds of “humans howling in pain, spooky gusts of whistling wind or the ‘scream of a thousand corpses.” “Some historians believe that the Aztecs used to sound the death whistle in order to help the deceased journey into the underworld. Tribes are said to have used the terrifying sounds as psychological warfare, to frighten enemies at the start of battle,” If the whistle was used during battles, the psychological effect on an enemy of a hundred death whistles screaming in unison might have been great, unhinging and undermining their resolve.inkfrog terapeak

Including education, competition, war, peace, social regulation, and of course, entertainment. They also produce stylized wooden spoons and intricate game boards used for mancala, a common game of"count and capture" History: Oral traditions describe the Dan society of the 19th century as lacking any central governing power. Social cohesion was fostered by a shared language and a preference for intermarriage. Generally. Each village had a headman who had earned his position of advantage in the community through hard work in the fields and through luck as a hunter. They usually surrounded themselves with young warriors for protection from invading neighbors and exchanged gifts with other chiefs in order to heighten their own prestige. Out of this custom was born the basic tradition of tin among the Dan, which was based on displaying one's success in order
Page Item: Superb Lwalwa Spirit Figure Specifications: 30 x 7 x 6 cm Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola(see ethnographical notes below) Medium: Timber Carving Provenance: Rudner Collection. Cape Town, Collected by Arthur Rudner prior to 1954. Comments: Excellent form. Old piece, beautiful deep patina LWALWA(BALUALUA. BALWALWA, LWALU) Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola Lwalwa people are related to Lulua. Inhabiting the triangle formed by the Kasai River and its tributary. The Lweta, in the southwest of the former Kasai province, 20,000 Lwalwa live in DRC, but many more are in Angola. Their social and political organization is rudimentary. Each Lwalwa village is headed by a male or female chief, whose power is held in check by a powerful society, the bangongo. The Lwalwa believe in a supreme being, but they worship only the spirits of the hunt and nature. The land where the Lwalwa live is rich and fertile. Lending itself well to the agricultural economy of the people. ... moreThe women are almost wholly responsible for all that goes into the growing of crops, both for local consumption and for trade. The men do, however, lend a hand during the busy harvest time, so that they can evaluate their household intake for the season. Although hunting by the men provides some occasional supplementary protein, the women provide the majority of the nutritious intake. The hunt, sometimes individual and sometimes communal, still plays an important social role among the Lwalwa. The sculptor enjoyed a privileged status and was paid handsomely; his profession was hereditary and often, due to his riches, he was made village chief in charge of the masked dances. Lwalwa carvers are famous for their masks. The masks typically display a balanced composition. An enlarged angular nose, a protruding mouth and slanted eyes set under a deeply formed forehead. These sharply delineated features give Lwalwa art almost geometric appearance. The masks may be divided into four types: the nkaki, or man’s mask, with a nose sculp
Page Item: Ijo Female Ancestor Figure Specifications: 22 x 5.5 x 5 cm Origin: see ethnographical notes below) Medium: Carved Timber Context: Represents a female ancestor. IJO(IJAW) Nigeria Numbering 200.000 to 350,000, the Ijo people live mainly in the creeks and mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta area. Being fishermen and traders they depend upon the water for food and communication. The Ijo are divided into two groups: the Kalabari-Ijo, east of the Nun River, and the western or central Ijo, who live to the west and northwest of this river. The art of both groups is characterized by a schematized approach. Whereby most works of the central Ijo evince a higher degree of stylization and abstraction than those done in the Kalabari regional style. Yet also found in the western area are more realistic masks in the form of fish or animals, which are worn on the forehead. However, the best known forehead masks of the central Ijo, which embody water spirits(owuamapu) contain depictions of human ... moreheads built up of geometric shapes and combined with zoomorphic or abstract elements. Besides ancestors and deceased local heroes, water spirits play an important role in the religious ideas of the Ijo. They believe that these spirits are like humans in terms of their strengths and weaknesses and that before their birth, human beings live among them. Once born. The Ijo maintain contact with them through prayers in order to gain their favors. Celebrations in honor of the water spirits lasting several days are held annually, either at the beginning of the year or the time of high water, in order to gain the spirits’ goodwill and insure the group’s welfare. In the course of festivities various masqueraders embodying the water spirits perform, and the presence of the spirits, by whom they feel possessed, is manifested in the intensity of their dancing. The Ijo masks for the cults of the water spirits are made in the form of aquatic animals. Especially hippopotamus and crocodiles. The western Ijo use the figures, in which the he

François Neyt(1985) devoted a book to the ethnic groups of the state of the Benue; we are taking from it a part of our information regarding the ldoma. Igala, and Tiv. Numbering 400,000, the Igala inhabit the left bank of the Niger River South of its confluence with the Benue. They speak a Kwa language. Their neighbors are the Igbo to the south and the Idoma to the east, and they have always maintained contact with the Bini, the Yoruba, and the Jukun. They are primarily farmers. According to tradition. At the end of the sixteenth century, the different autochthonous Igaia-Mela clans rallied around one king, or ata, of foreign origin, called Ayegba. The ala attended to the various ethnic communities that lived in the capital, Idah: the lgbo, Nupe, Igbira, and Hausa. J.C. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason. There is no large Lega art. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden. But little by little, ivory came into use. Later ma

Lost Treasures of Africa This RARE and unusual pair of matching African statues were acquired(after much negotiation) from a small village near the Zambia Tanzania border crossing. Approximately 600km north of Lusaka. They are authentically African tribal in nature. And are hand carved, not machine made. The grain is very pure, and the beadwork enhances the decorative value of the carvings. We estimate them to be 1970's vintage. They would make a beautiful addition to any table setting. Or on a desk/ display type cabinet, and would enhance the look and aesthetic beauty of any African décor theme. At just under 60cm in height each. They are not small, and have a stable base on which they each stand. Flat minor postage for Australian buyers. International buyers should enquire about postage prior. Posted with
