At a ceremony where Doolittle was awarded honorary membership in the Air Line Pilots Association he swapped stories with Astronaut Frank Borman and offered him two definitions from his flying experiences. "Anxiety is something generated by a feeling that you might not succeed. Fear is something else - that is what you feel when you're in an inextricable position". In 1922, James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle (1896-1993) made the first transcontinental flight in less than 24 hours. In the 1920s and 1930s, he set various speed and flight records. During WWII, Doolittle, a veteran of WWI, and 79 other fighter pilots ("Doolittle's Raiders") bombed Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first air attack on the Japanese capital. Also hit were targets in Yokohama and other cities, scoring a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Doolittle was promoted to Brigadier General the next day and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the raid. After retiring from the military at the end of WWII, Doolittle was an executive with Shell Oil until his retirement in 1959. Toned. One vertical mailing fold through center. Photograph signed: "RE Cole", " Davy Jones/[paraph]", "Tom Griffin", " David J. Thatcher", "#3/Charles J. Ozuk" and "Bill Bower". B/w, 11x14. Depicts Jimmy Doolittle standing by a recruiting poster for his famous Raiders. The poster promises an "All Expenses Paid" trip to Japan. Signatures of six of the 80 men who took off in 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers from the U.S.S. Hornet for a daring raid over Japan on April 18, 1942. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, the raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Although it inflicted little physical damage on Japan, Doolittle's raid was a huge morale booster for the American people, who had been hearing of one defeat after another since Japan's commenced the Pacific phase of WWII, from Pearl Harbor to the surrender of the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines (April 8, 1942). Miraculously, 72 of the 80 crew members survived, four dying on the mission and four more in Japanese captivity. In addition to the morale boost, the raid had strategic significance, solidifying support among Japanese military planners for Admiral Yamamoto's ultimately disastrous attack on Midway Island in the central Pacific. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine condition. See more material from these signers: DOOLITTLE RAIDERS CAPTAIN CHARLES J. OZUK MAJOR THOMAS C. I have been a fulltime buyer and seller of autographs for some 30 years -- on eBay since 1997. The best guarantee a buyer has for autographs is the credibility and experience of the dealer. My background in autographs started as a reporter in both newspapers and radio/TV -- covering Hollywood, sports, and national politics at various times. Most of the autographs I sell came from my contacts as a reporter, or are obtained from reputable sources. I am co-author of the Sanders Price Guide to Sports Autographs, and I was a contributing editor and price consultant for the late George Sanders for all of his autograph price guides, until his death in 1998. I accept payment through Paypal. I ship through the US Postal Service.
