Over 300 black-and-white photographs, 25 plates in full-color, and an in-depth section on marks and hallmarks complement a rich narrative which reviews the history and production of collectible silver of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. ART NOUVEAU AND ART DECO SILVER . By Annelies Krekel-Aalberse, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., NY, 1989. This scarce book presents a neglected side of Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorative creations—those in silver. The in-depth narrative and profuse illustrations make ... morethis book an invaluable resource reference work. “Annelies Krekel-Aalberse is curator of the silver collection at Van Kempen and Begeer, a leading Dutch firm of silversmiths. In this groundbreaking study, she analyzes and compares the work of all the most important designers and silver smiths of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods in Great Britain, Holland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, the Scandinavian countries, Russia and the United States. She shows the broad division between those who revived the silversmith’s hand craftsmanship, adding new ornaments to old and proven shapes and later developing new styles, and those who foresaw a future in which machinery was indispensable, yielding new and appropriate forms for modern life. Both groups defied the conventional—which continued to dominate international taste—to produce objects whose extraordinary qualities are fully appreciated only today. They included among their number not only trained silversmiths who created their own designs but also painters and architects whose designs were executed in the leading silver workshops. More than 300 objects are shown here, many for the first time, in superb reproductions accompanied by detailed descriptions and by documentary illustrations of contemporary interiors. Biographies of individual silversmiths and designers, short histories of silver firms, information on exhibition catalogues and magazines, as well as a bibliography and a comprehensive pictorial guide to hundreds of makers’ designers’, and retailers’ marks and the hallmarks of different countries all combine to make this the indispensable book on Art Nouveau and Art Deco silver.” 9.25” x 11.5” hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 272 pages. OLD ENGLISH PLATE: Ecclesiastical, Decorative, and Domestic: Its Makers and Marks by Wilfred Joseph Cripps, Spring Books, London, 1878/1967. This comprehensive out-of-print book, which first appeared in 1878, contains not only invaluable text on gold and silver plate, but also over 2,600 makers’ marks and date letters, 122 black-and-white illustrations, and 13 half-tone plates. “The title is misleading; the book covers not only England, but also Scotland and Ireland, with some reference to French ... moretrade guilds. It is carefully organized, beginning with an introductory survey of gold and silver, which have been prized for many centuries. The various alloys – so necessary but tempting to the fraudulent – are carefully explained. Subsequent chapters cover the history of the goldsmiths’ and silversmiths’ crafts, with the complex legislation associated with them, followed by extensive descriptions of the articles themselves, from communion cups to cake-baskets, many of which are illustrated. One of the most valuable features is the exhaustive treatment of plate marks, over 2,600 of which are illustrated. The book ends with a useful index, which not only covers the subject-matter of the various chapters, but also contains key references to many plate marks, thus being an extremely helpful aid to identification.” This text is an invaluable resource reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of antique silver and gold plate metal wares. 5.7” x 8.9” hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 519 pages. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs, this early out-of-print book pictures and describes examples of antique British and Continental silver and gold including extensive information on marks. ENGLISH AND OTHER CONTINENTAL SILVER IN THE IRWIN UNTERMYER COLLECTION text by Yvonne Hackenbroch, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, 1969. Superb black-and-white photographs with identifying captions highlight this comprehensive pictorial guide to English domestic and liturgical silver with ... morefewer examples of Continental silver. This new publication, greatly enlarged and completely revised, arranges the items in chronological order from the Tudor period to the nineteenth century. Each piece is fully illustrated and its hallmarks are reproduced in photographic enlargements. The examples chosen for this book “allow one to trace more clearly the formation of distinctive styles, as well as the artistic development of such silversmiths as Nelme, Platel, Willhaume, Mettayer, Pantin, and Lamerie. Few other collections of English silver, private or public, offer comparable opportunities for the student and the connoisseur.” ”The examples of Continental silver and gold, though fewer in number than the English, are characteristic of their countries of origin. They serve also to illustrate prevailing styles elsewhere, since trends in style in silver are rarely confined to individual countries.” Pictured and described are examples of tankards, baskets, salts, flagons, jugs, cups, spoons, forks, silver-gilt dishes, beaker vases, covered cups, porringers, cordial pots, saucers, snuffers and stand, candlesticks, chocolate pots, spice boxes, teapots, inkstands, caskets, communion cups, and more. The brilliant photographs, identifying captions, the enlarged photos of hallmarks, and rich narrative combine to make this book an invaluable reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of antique silver. Oversize / heavy 9.3” x 12” hardback with dust cover in very good condition. Approximately 300 pages. FREE media mail shipping and handling for deliveries within the 50 United States. Stephen G.C. Ensko’s AMERICAN SILVERSMITHS AND THEIR MARKS - The Definitive (1948) Edition, Dover Publications, Inc., NY. This Dover edition, first published in 1983. ”For serious connoisseurs of American gold and silver ware, silver dealer [this book] is a rich and definitive directory. Ensko has compiled an exhaustive study of gold- and silversmiths working between the years 1650 and 1850. Biographical details and location of their shops are given wherever possible. Maps of the great metropolitan ... morecenters of smithing (Boston, New York, and Philadelphia) with shop locations noted are appended. Over 200 of the finest examples of the work of early American artisans are displayed in sharp, clear, black-and-white photographs. Items include tankards, cups, candlesticks, sugar boxes, inkstands, tea sets, porringers, plus a pitcher, sauce dish, tea pot and other works by famous New England patriot Paul Revere. The usefulness of this work is perhaps most apparent in the practical listing of identifying marks associated with gold- and silversmiths. With over 3,000 entries, this feature alone renders the book indispensable to enthusiasts interested in tracking down and identifying antique pieces.” 5.3” x 8.4” softback in very good condition. 287 pages. eBay Auction 1939 Good Housekeeping Reprint"What is a Set of Silver" Foldout Aritcle An old Good Housekeeping reprint of a 1939 article"What Is A Set Of Silver? A tri-fold. Fold out article about silver and silver collecting. It has been folded horizontally, perhaps to fit in an envelope. It's beginning to come apart in some of the creases. The pages measure about 11 x 8.5 inches. This is a magazine reprint from Good Housekeeping- NOT a xerox copy. I am unsure of the reprint date. I did not photograph all of the pages. The article answers questions: What is a set of silver? What is the most complete set of silver it is possible to buy? How many kinds of pieces should be in a minimum set? What if I can't afford a complete set. Or even a minimum one? Would you recommend the purchase of thir- and forth-grade silverware? What would it cost to own the complete set in high-grade silverplate? How does that compare in cost with a minimum set? Shall I buy sterling or plate? ... moreHow important is the manufacturer's guaranty which has always been connected with the buying of silver?
