17"Screen resolution: 1024x768 85Hz WELCOME TO CHINATOWN-ANTIQUER TIBET: The Mysterious Land. The Unique Ancient Culture No.934: Chinese Copper miniature ... moreabacus SuanPans 13 Column 91 Count beads Size Length 8.46/ Width 2.75(inches) Weight 1.10kg Include wrapper Material Copper Chinese Abacus: The earliest known written documentation of the Chinese abacus dates to the 2nd century BC. The Chinese abacus. Known as the suànpán(算盤, lit. Counting tray" is typically 20 cm(8 in) tall and comes in various widths depending on the operator. It usually has more than seven rods. There are two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads each in the bottom for both decimal and hexadecimal computation. The beads are usually rounded and made of a hardwood. The beads are counted by moving them up or down towards the beam. If you move them toward the beam, you count their value. If you move away, you don't count their value.15] The suanpan can be reset to the starting position instantly by a quick jerk along the horizontal axis to spin all the beads away from the horizontal beam at the center. Suanpans can be used for functions other than counting. Unlike the simple counting board used in elementary schools. Very efficient suanpan techniques have been developed to do multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, square root and cube root operations at high speed. There are currently schools teaching students how to use it. In the famous long scroll Along the River During the Qingming Festival painted by Zhang Zeduan(1085–1145 AD) during the Song Dynasty(960–1297 AD) A suanpan is clearly seen lying beside an account book and doctor's prescriptions on the counter of an apothecary's(Feibao) The similarity of the Roman abacus to the Chinese one suggests that one could have inspired the other. As there is some evidence of a trade relationship between the Roman Empire and China. However, no direct connection can be demonstrated, and the similarity of the abaci may be coincidental, both ultimately

The Baka(Pygmy) Tribe of Cameroon Population The Baka's exact numbers are difficult to determine. But estimates range from 30,000 to 40,000 individuals. Language Most pigmys speak in the clicks of their tounges. Subsistence The Baka are a hunter-gatherer people. Groups establish temporary camps of huts constructed of bowed branches covered in large leaves(though today more and more homes are constructed following Bantu methods) The men hunt and trap in the surrounding forest. Using poisoned arrows and spears to great effect. They sometimes obtain honey from beehives in the forest canopy. The men also fish using chemicals obtained from crushed plant material. Using fast-moving river water, they disperse the chemical downstream. This non-toxic chemical deprives fish of oxygen, making them float to the surface and easily collected by Baka men. Another method of fishing, performed only by women, is dam fishing, in which water is removed from a dammed area and fish are taken from the exposed ground. Women also gather wild fruits and nuts or practice beekeeping while tending to the children. The group remains in one area until it is hunted

Location: Nigeria. Africa, is composed of basically three different ethnic groups: the Yorubas, the Hausas, and the Ibos. The Ibos live in Iboland. It comes as no surprise that the stifling heat of central Africa would dictate the type of clothing worn by any native peoples. The Ibos wear little or nothing until they reach puberty. At this time, the men usually wear loose-fitting cotton shirts and a loincloth, while the women wrap different pieces of cloth around themselves and also wrap some cloth around their head. The men often carry machetes, useful for clearing overgrown paths and offering protection for wild animals. Language: The language of the Ibos is very interesting. It is derived from a group of languages commonly found in West Africa. The Kwa languages. It is based a lot on pitch, vocal inflections, and context when defining the meaning of a word. A single word can have numerous meanings depending on these factors. Idioms and proverbs play an important role in the Ibo language. All email correspondence is re-directed to my mobile phone and will be answered as soon as possible. History of the Ethiopian Coptic Cross European missionaries brought Christianity to many parts of Africa. In parallel with colonialism. But this was not the case with Ethiopia. The kingdom was probably the second country(after Armenia) to embrace the Christian faith, when St. Frumentius of Tyre converted King Ezana during the 4th century. There is evidence that Christianity thrived in the country even in the 1st century and for most of the country's history since, the state religion has been Orthodox Christianity. There was a brief experiment with Catholicism in the 17th century when Emperor Susenyos allowed himself to be persuaded by Jesuit missionaries from Portugal- possibly a political move to help secure Portuguese and Spanish military assistance. If that was his cunning plan. It backfired. Not only did the European soldiers fail to arrive, but the demands of Rome were just too unpalatable for the Ethiopians. Centuries of culture were threatened and many Ethiopians revolted with great loss of life. The emperor relented, expelled the missionaries, and in 1632 the state religion reverted to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that rather than the familiar European Latin Cross, the Ethiopian Cross has a distinctive'African' appearance. These are often named after the Northern Ethiopian regions and towns they are found in; for example Lalibela. Axum and Gondar. Ethiopian crosses are invariably made from elaborate lattice work. Hand crosses usually include a square at the base, which represents the Ark of the Covenant and both the Ark and the Cross bear the Shekinah. Geometric patterns are common in Ethiopian art and there is order and meaning in the intertwined latt

This piece has obviously been well used, valued and repaired several times. Location: Southeastern Congo(Zaire) Population: 150.000 Language: KiSongye(Bantu) Neighboring Peoples: Luba. Luba Kasai, Sungu, Tetela, Mputu, Luntu, Binji, Kaniok, Kusu Types of Art: There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. History: Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. Economy: The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. Political Systems: The Songye are divided into about 35 subgro
