Each Lwalwa village is headed by a male or female chief, whose power is held in check by a powerful society, the bangongo. The Lwalwa believe in a supreme being, but they worship only the spirits of the hunt and nature. The land where the Lwalwa live is rich and fertile. Lending itself well to the agricultural economy of the people. The women are almost wholly responsible for all that goes into the growing of crops, both for local consumption and for trade. The men do, however, lend a hand during the busy harvest time, so that they can evaluate their household intake for the season. Although hunting by the men provides some occasional supplementary protein, the women provide the majority of the nutritious intake. The hunt, sometimes individual and sometimes communal, still plays an important social role among the Lwalwa. The sculptor enjoyed a privileged status and was paid handsomely; his profession was hereditary and often, due to his riches, he was made village chief in charge of the masked dances. Lwalwa carvers are famous for their masks. The masks typically display a balanced composition. An enlarged angular nose, a protruding mouth and slanted eyes set under a deeply formed forehead. These sharply delineated features give Lwalwa art almost geometric appearance. The masks may be divided into four types: the nkaki, or man’s mask, with a nose sculp

Page Item: Ijo Female Ancestor Figure Specifications: 22 x 5.5 x 5 cm Origin: see ethnographical notes below) Medium: Carved Timber Context: Represents a female ancestor. IJO(IJAW) Nigeria Numbering 200.000 to 350,000, the Ijo people live mainly in the creeks and mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta area. Being fishermen and traders they depend upon the water for food and communication. The Ijo are divided into two groups: the Kalabari-Ijo, east of the Nun River, and the western or central Ijo, who ... morelive to the west and northwest of this river. The art of both groups is characterized by a schematized approach. Whereby most works of the central Ijo evince a higher degree of stylization and abstraction than those done in the Kalabari regional style. Yet also found in the western area are more realistic masks in the form of fish or animals, which are worn on the forehead. However, the best known forehead masks of the central Ijo, which embody water spirits(owuamapu) contain depictions of human heads built up of geometric shapes and combined with zoomorphic or abstract elements. Besides ancestors and deceased local heroes, water spirits play an important role in the religious ideas of the Ijo. They believe that these spirits are like humans in terms of their strengths and weaknesses and that before their birth, human beings live among them. Once born. The Ijo maintain contact with them through prayers in order to gain their favors. Celebrations in honor of the water spirits lasting several days are held annually, either at the beginning of the year or the time of high water, in order to gain the spirits’ goodwill and insure the group’s welfare. In the course of festivities various masqueraders embodying the water spirits perform, and the presence of the spirits, by whom they feel possessed, is manifested in the intensity of their dancing. The Ijo masks for the cults of the water spirits are made in the form of aquatic animals. Especially hippopotamus and crocodiles. The western Ijo use the figures, in which the he

François Neyt(1985) devoted a book to the ethnic groups of the state of the Benue; we are taking from it a part of our information regarding the ldoma. Igala, and Tiv. Numbering 400,000, the Igala inhabit the left bank of the Niger River South of its confluence with the Benue. They speak a Kwa language. Their neighbors are the Igbo to the south and the Idoma to the east, and they have always maintained contact with the Bini, the Yoruba, and the Jukun. They are primarily farmers. According to tradition. At the end of the sixteenth century, the different autochthonous Igaia-Mela clans rallied around one king, or ata, of foreign origin, called Ayegba. The ala attended to the various ethnic communities that lived in the capital, Idah: the lgbo, Nupe, Igbira, and Hausa. J.C. Muller has shown(1980) that this system of power was not absolute since, faced with the royal clan whose four branches governed in turn, the

The Baka(Pygmy) Tribe of Cameroon Population The Baka's exact numbers are difficult to determine. But estimates range from 30,000 to 40,000 individuals. Language Most pigmys speak in the clicks of their tounges. Subsistence The Baka are a hunter-gatherer people. Groups establish temporary camps of huts constructed of bowed branches covered in large leaves(though today more and more homes are constructed following Bantu methods) The men hunt and trap in the surrounding forest. Using poisoned arrows and spears to great effect. They sometimes obtain honey from beehives in the forest canopy. The men also fish using chemicals obtained from crushed plant material. Using fast-moving river water, they disperse the chemical downstream. This non-toxic chemical deprives fish of oxygen, making them float to the surface and easily collected by Baka men. Another method of fishing, performed only by women, is dam fishing, in which water is removed from a dammed area and fish are taken from the exposed ground. Women also gather wild fruits and nuts or practice beekeeping while tending to the children. The group remains in one area until it is hunted

Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo(see ethnographical notes below) Provenance: Private Collection. Melbourne, Australia. About The Lega Tribe The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral ... moreauthority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture. Hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: men hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social. Religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level. A series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason. There is no large Lega art. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden. But little by little, ivory came into use. Later ma

Location: Nigeria. Africa, is composed of basically three different ethnic groups: the Yorubas, the Hausas, and the Ibos. The Ibos live in Iboland. It comes as no surprise that the stifling heat of central Africa would dictate the type of clothing worn by any native peoples. The Ibos wear little or nothing until they reach puberty. At this time, the men usually wear loose-fitting cotton shirts and a loincloth, while the women wrap different pieces of cloth around themselves and also wrap some cloth around their head. The men often carry machetes, useful for clearing overgrown paths and offering protection for wild animals. Language: The language of the Ibos is very interesting. It is derived from a group of languages commonly found in West Africa. The Kwa languages. It is based a lot on pitch, vocal inflections, and context when defining the meaning of a word. A single word can have numerous meanings depending on these factors. Idioms and proverbs play an important role in the Ibo language. All email correspondence is re-directed to my mobile phone and will be answered as soon as possible. History of the Ethiopian Coptic Cross European missionaries brought Christianity to many parts of Africa. In parallel with colonialism. But this was not the case with Ethiopia. The kingdom was ... moreprobably the second country(after Armenia) to embrace the Christian faith, when St. Frumentius of Tyre converted King Ezana during the 4th century. There is evidence that Christianity thrived in the country even in the 1st century and for most of the country's history since, the state religion has been Orthodox Christianity. There was a brief experiment with Catholicism in the 17th century when Emperor Susenyos allowed himself to be persuaded by Jesuit missionaries from Portugal- possibly a political move to help secure Portuguese and Spanish military assistance. If that was his cunning plan. It backfired. Not only did the European soldiers fail to arrive, but the demands of Rome were just too unpalatable for the Ethiopians. Centuries of culture were threatened and many Ethiopians revolted with great loss of life. The emperor relented, expelled the missionaries, and in 1632 the state religion reverted to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that rather than the familiar European Latin Cross, the Ethiopian Cross has a distinctive'African' appearance. These are often named after the Northern Ethiopian regions and towns they are found in; for example Lalibela. Axum and Gondar. Ethiopian crosses are invariably made from elaborate lattice work. Hand crosses usually include a square at the base, which represents the Ark of the Covenant and both the Ark and the Cross bear the Shekinah. Geometric patterns are common in Ethiopian art and there is order and meaning in the intertwined latt

Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. History: Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. Economy: The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. Political Systems: The Songye are divided into about 35 subgro

STARTING PRICE REDUCED! AFRICAN FERTILITY DOLL– TWIN HEADS(stand included) When the concept of"doll" is considered in the context of Africa n culture. They are usually not children's playthings, but rather objects that are laden with ritual and religious associations within the community. Africa n dolls are used to teach. And entertain, they are supernatural intermediaries, and they are manipulated for ritual purposes. Each of these dolls is unique because they are handmade and are ... moretraditionally handed down through generations. During courtship. A suitor will place a doll outside a young woman’s hut, indicating his intention to propose marriage to her. He makes the doll from wood and decorates it with hair, beads, and other small objects. He then gives it to his fiance, who wears it in a baby carrier on her back. The doll is a symbol of their marriage commitment and represents their future child. The man gives the doll the gender that he desires for his first-born. The young woman cares for the figure until the promised child is born; at this point, the couple carefully stores the doll away. This item is one of many African pieces. Which I will be listing over coming weeks. All these items belonged to a Collector who had imported the items some years ago and was intending to set up a shop– so most pieces I have are presented on stands, ready for display in the shop. He changed his mind and returned to South Africa, and sold his entire collection, some of which I was lucky enough to acquire) The photos give the best description of this collectable item. Lost Treasures of Africa Authentic hand crafted and hand carved Baobab tribal mask This beautiful and genuine hand crafted/ hand carved mask was sourced exclusively from the wilds of East Africa. And from a region in Southern Tanzania known formally as Tanganyika, or German East Africa. It was acquired from an old colonial established agricultural estate. And from within its resident vintage art collection, and has been dated to the early 1940's. Since early times. Masks have been used throughout ... moreAfrica as symbols of the cultures which created them. In Swahili speaking East Africa, masks have been used for spiritual and ceremonial purpose, and each tribe had unique stories and history to accompany their masks. This mask was most likely designed and decorated to show great wealth and dignity of its owner. It would have also been used in ceremonies depicting deities, spirits of ancestors, mythological beings, good and evil spirits, the dead, animal spirits, and other beings believed to have power over humanity. This mask is beautifully preserved for it's age. And has been immaculately maintained. Superb craftsmanship has gone into creating durability and sturdiness. It will be an ever valuable antique for future years. This mask is quite large at almost 80cm in height. And approx. 28cm in width at the top. Unlike other examples currently on Ebay, it is genuine solid Baobab wood, and typical of it's era. It has slightly different markings across the grain but these are not defects however, rather, they are your guarantee of the natural& original nature of the product. Following our trips to the remotest parts of this region. We are proud to be able to offer this item direct on Ebay, and at a substantial discount to the price normally paid by visitors overseas. Lost Treasures of Africa At a very substantial 65-70cm in string length from tip of trunk. Along the spine, to the back leg, and approaching 25cm in height and just under 28cm in length, we have difficulty in describing just how magnificent this solid ebony elephant carving actually is. It has come direct from the Maasai lands of Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Unlike other examples on EBay. It is both genuine and has been authentically carved by hand. Sourced from one of the most remote parts ... moreof East Africa. It is dated to the mid/late 1960's. And is now an antique. It comes from a time when local skilled artists took traditional elements from the savannah environment to create this beautiful and highly detailed statue, with a stunning outcome. The detail in this elephant is excellent. With faultless proportioning and scale. It is one of the most impressive elephant carvings we have come across, and will be a stunning display piece in either office or home. Being made of Ebony. The beauty of this particular type of wood grain is known all over the World. It is the most highly prized wood available for use in carving statues and figurines for the following reasons First of all. It is hard, heavy and dense, amongst the most dense of all woods. This piece alone was carved from a single piece of wood. Secondly. Ebony is also one of the most expensive grains in the world. Regularly priced above all other African timbers, it is the real deal and the only deal for most genuine collectors. Overall. Ebony is known for its dark color, incredible hardness, heavy weight and amazingly high cost. This particular elephant is tan brown in colour, with streaks of black, and also lighter bands, from heartwood. The item was sourced from the Maasai tribal areas bordering the Serengeti and will be a talking point to anyone who sees it. As can be seen from the photo's. It is beautifully and intricately carved, and shows much fine detail, particularly in the trunk, tail and ears. An object of beauty. We have seen similar

Lovely souvenir bag from Durban South Africa. I think from the 50's. Hand worked with applique. Embroidery and beading. Depicting a family in nice attire having a good time in the shade of a palm tree. It's never been used. But it still has a few pinpricks, overall in good condition. Any questions. Please ask.

BALEGGA, REGA, WALEGA, WAREGA) Democratic Republic of the Congo The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization. And both men and women aspire to moral ... moreauthority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social, religious, and political life of the Lega. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason, there is no large Lega art. All Lega art is used within the context of the bwami society. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden

A rather unsettling piece with the main character wrapped around in a large snake. Between it's legs is a smaller kneeling figure. Hands covering its face in prayer or fear. A face only a mother could love. The damage could be age. But in no way lessens it overall macabre appeal. The hole is right through the middle and at the top of the head is separate round plug of wood. Weight is approx 2.0 kg's& height is 41.0 cm. It's approx 10 cm in diameter. Possibly Ethiopian from the Mursi or Suri ... moretribe. Her ear lobes are stretched to be used as part of her clothing, it seems. She has sharp Nilotic features and would most likely have been considered a beauty. There is a small crack to the wood on the top of her head, where there was once a nail for hanging. Now, she has two ring things and a shoe lace to hang by! I am unsure of her age but she was unlikely to have been made after mid 50s, as her previous owner was in Africa shortly after WWII, for about 8 years. She measures 26 cms high, 17 cms wide and approx 9 cms deep. I always combine post where possible. Which saves you heaps.
